Miss Teen USA is making a big change with their competition! They have decided to trade in swimsuits for athletic wear.
The president of the Miss Teen USA organization said the decision ‘Reflects an important cultural shift.’ The Organization’s switch to the athletic wear portion is meant to highlight importance of physical fitness for young women.
The reason for this shift was because beauty pageants have long been seen as outdated and objectifying women.
Miss Universe president Paula Shugart also states, “Our hope is that this decision will help all of Miss Teen USA’s fans recognize these young women for the strong, inspiring individuals they are.”
This move is consistent with the overall rebranding of the Miss Universe Organization, which has shifted under WME-IMG, the talent agency that purchased it from former owner Donald Trump in September. The organization wants to direct itself towards health and wellness, showcasing the importance of fitness rather than how one looks in a swimsuit.
We have yet to find out exactly what this new athletic wear competition will look like, but the decision is definitely a step in the right direction. Your move, Miss America, Miss USA, and Miss Universe.
