Feeling a little nostalgic this summer? Every era from the 60’s to the 80’s is having a moment, with “healthy and wealthy” becoming a pervading trend in fashion and beauty, a natural progression from the “quiet luxury” trend of season past that referenced country club affluence ranging from preppy to old money. Cue Maxine Simmons played by Kristen Wiig in the hit Apple TV+ series Palm Royale about 1960’s Palm Beach society’s glamorous facade, which has inspired many of the summer’s most requested looks from the updated beehive, teased crowns, voluminous waves, and glam updo’s. The 60’s was an era of bold, adventurous, rule-breaking beauty and style, more fun, over the top and exuberant, reflective of culture of the time. Hair stylist and makeup artist Colleen Stone created a modern take on the style for the summer campaign for Lilly Pulitzer adding the extra volume and length needed with Hidden Crown® Clip Ins:
Colleen Stone “We were inspired by Lilly Pulitzer herself and the 1960’s era of Palm Beach with a little Maxine in Palm Royale thrown in.
- I began by adding Hidden Crown® Clip Ins in Cool Ashy Blonde with Highlights #116 to give me the volume I needed to create the look.
- I prepped hair with Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse to get maximum volume at the root.
- Next I blow-dried the hair before curling it with a 1 1/4 inch curling iron to blend in the extensions with the model’s own hair.
- I then sectioned off the crown area and teased it while adding Moroccanoil Root Boost to hold the height: I gathered the hair at the crown into a pony, flipping it up into a half up half down ponytail that I teased again to get even more volume.
- I curled each section for the hair and added texture with Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray, separating the strands with my fingers to keep it modern and fresh rather than controlled waves.
It’s the perfect look for summer weddings or events, and works equally as well with ponytails, updo’s, and half up half down styles. Add a ribbon or bow for a 60’s glam flourish. We will be seeing the volume hair trend through next winter and holiday season as well. There are so many variations! Have fun with it!”
